WESTMORELAND COUNTY, PA  On September 14th, the Westmoreland County sheriff decided to no longer identify as a Democrat and has since transitioned to the Republican Party after all that has played out in the recent months across the country.

Sheriff James Albert noted that the decision to transition didn’t come easy, but after considering the “ideals” currently touted by the two parties, Sheriff Albert came to the realization that he can’t call himself a Democrat any longer:

“It was a really difficult decision and I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I feel I stand for the ideals of the Republican Party platform more than the Democrats today.”

The sheriff went into further details as to how he arrived at his recent decision, pointing to the likes of being an advocate for the Second Amendment and also being pro-life:

“I’ve been a lifelong Democrat, but a conservative Democrat at that. I’m pro-life, a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, a lifetime member of the NRA and, today, I feel my ideals are closer to the Republican Party than Democrats.”

Sheriff Albert was elected as sheriff in 2019, obviously having run under the Democratic ticket. But after having witnessed the reaction from other Democrats to the ongoing riots across the nation, he felt compelled to officiate the party switch.

He pointed to key events over the past months, such as the murder of retired police captain David Dorn:

“I was saddened and enraged by the murder of David Dorn, a 77-year-old African American retired police captain, who was shot by a pawn shop looter during a protest in St. Louis.”

Sheriff Albert also mentioned how there wasn’t just a lack of action by Democrats to stop the riots – but it seemed as though there was placating going on by the party in favor of the bad actors:

“These outrageous, lawless acts have been met with silence, acquiescence and, in some instances, outright support from the local, state and national leadership of the Democratic Party.”

Even though Sheriff Albert has proverbially walked away from the Democratic Party, he feels as though it was the party that had abandoned him:

“As a lifelong public servant and member of law enforcement, I have not left the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party has left me.”

This isn’t the only sheriff in recent weeks to have transitioned from the Democratic Party over to the GOP. We recently reported on two other sheriffs that made the very same move. Here’s our previous report on that.

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, IN – The Vanderburgh County sheriff has apparently had enough of the shenanigans coming from the Democratic Party of late – and officially announced on September 3rd that he’s switching over to the Republican party.

Sheriff Dave Wedding is now among those who have engaged in the proverbial “walking away” from the Democratic Party.

After said announcement, Sheriff Wedding spoke with a local news outlet in further detail as to his reasoning for leaving the party he used to run under:

“The Democrats represented hard-working individuals. People who were just working class America and they believed in values, family and that you’ve got to work to achieve.

“I think we’ve lost that in the Democratic Party. I was one of the people who had nothing growing up and I’ve worked to achieve. I’m proud of where I was and where I am today.”

Yet in recent times, the sheriff has seen the party that once valued the aforementioned mutate into something almost unrecognizable:

“Watching the daily burning of American flags, failing to be able to use the word God in any sentence at most Democrat-led functions, denouncing law enforcement as if we’re the evil people.

“I am very proud of my profession in law enforcement and when people attack us, it’s pretty insulting.”

The announcement was made outside of White Stallion Energy located in Evansville where Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch were also in attendance.

The Democratic Party of Vanderburgh County didn’t wait long to issue their own statement with regard to Sheriff Wedding switching sides on the political spectrum.

In said statement, the DPVC stated that they were “disappointed” in the sheriff’s announcement:

“While we are disappointed with Dave Wedding’s decision to leave the Democratic party, we are more disappointed with the reasoning he provided the community for his choice.”

The statement acknowledged that there were “many conversations regarding police reform” nationally, but then alleged that Sheriff Wedding was being nothing more than an opportunist:

“His move to the Republican party after benefiting from years of Democratic support make his political opportunism all the more distasteful.”

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first sheriff in Indiana to have recently moved over from the Democratic party to the Republican party.

Posey County Sheriff Tom Latham was elected sheriff under the Democratic Party back in 2018, but in late June announced that he was switching parties:

“I have always lived my life by conservative values and have felt strongly that a political party does not define me as a person. That being said, my values – and the values of today’s Democrat platform – are so different that I can no longer call myself a Democrat.”

Sheriff Latham noted that the era of the Democratic party where leaders like John F. Kennedy spoke of “unity and hope” has now been replaced with “divisiveness and anger”:

“Personally – and professionally – I can no longer be a member of an organization that promotes this agenda. I will not sit silently as Democrats urge the defunding of police across our nation. I will not be complicit in advocating for division.”

As with many of the Democratic talking points lately being ones that portray law enforcement as some sort of despicable entity, the Posey County sheriff had suffered all he could endure from that narrative:

“There are good men and women in law enforcement. Men and women who have given their lives for the safety of the community they serve. I have served alongside many. These men and women deserve to be respected, not demeaned and demonized.”

That makes two sheriffs in one state noting that the anti-law enforcement agenda being heralded by mainstay Democrats has pushed them to align with the political party that has been supporting police in these times instead of demeaning them.
